Forex FAQs - What is the Most Traded Currency?

The simple answer to this question is the U.S. dollar. The most traded currencies in the foreign exchange market sometimes change position, but the list from most traded to least among the majors has generally been as follows:

  1. U.S. dollar (USD)
  2. Euro (EUR)
  3. Japanese yen (JPY)
  4. British pound (GBP)
  5. Swiss franc (CHF)
  6. Canadian dollar (CAD)
  7. Australia dollar (AUD)
The U.S. dollar has been the most traded currency in the world for decades, but this is also part of being the world’s largest economy. Obviously, if China were to release the yuan from its peg, then this list would change overnight. That said, the U.S. dollar would very likely hold the top spot even if the yuan were to join the major currencies on the forex market.
